I came across this stripped down frame (even the cable housings were empty) on the streets of Minneapolis. The Kryptonite U-lock was still hard at work keeping the frame secure. It was like coming across the the sun bleached bones of some ungulate in the desert. The vultures got their fill here.

This Phenomenon seems to be Universal in whatever Country you happen to be in. I have come across the Remains of Bikes in various Parts of Dublin in this Condition, just left to Rot away for Weeks and Months before someone or the Council decides to take them away.
Sometimes you find them just left on the Pathway with parts missing like a Wheel or the Chain Wheel Wrecked.
Some Bikes have their Wheels bent by the Vandals ,particularly on those Parking Stands that just Holds your Wheels and not the whole Frame. The Councils have a Habit of Siting Bike Parking in out of the way Areas like back Streets in dimly lit Spots. They are more interested in Providing Parking for Motorists ,Cyclists are just a Token second interest.
Hiya Jack! Thanks for your thoughts. This bike had been secured in a fairly well-lighted area on a busy street corner. Unfortunately, that corner is in a salty neighborhood. I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts that the theives did their work over a period of time but in broad daylight. The police act as if bicycle and bicycle parts theft just isn't monetarily significant enough to care about (ignoring that segment of people on the margins for whom the loss of cheap transportation can be devastating). I don't think that is the full story, though. If someone were to vandalize cars with destruction costing owners similar amounts to the loss of a bike, you better believe the cops would be on the case!
I don't know. Don't really feel bad for people who leave their bikes on a post for that long. But I do wonder if the folks who were picking the carcass are the same folks that are stealing other bikes.
I hear what you're saying, spiderleggreen, but I still feel sorry for people that get their things stolen. I know many people that must keep their bikes outside because they don't have room in their apartments. The bike probably was "totaled" pretty quickly in the eyes of the owner--I don't know.
fun blog, we've alot in common...brothers of the slow... I just don't wanta break my glasses
